Hi Farroad,
Ever since I saw this game was coming to Steam last year, I have been excited, periodically checking its date of release and always disappointed when it got pushed back. I got the game yesterday and have enjoyed about 8 hours of it but it really does get quite mundain after a while.
I have read some of the other threads, but not all of them; I might well be making points that have already been made by others. If so I would like to reiterate their points and, perhaps, add something new:
1. It really disappoints me that you have said there will be no mining, woodcutting etc. in the game at all because you guys don’t like it. It disappoints me on several accounts:
a) The self-sustaining settlement aspect of the AS is what has drawn a lot of players to the game; yeah, the laws are fun and all but the main reason a lot of people have bought this game because they enjoy the idea of being able to rebuild the world (or a singe settlement) and a huge aspect of this is not being reliant on the old world (salvaged materials) for its sustenance. Of course, in the early game its reasonable to assume salvage would be needed but late game, for immersion’s sake, should include some way to move away from a salvaged economy
b) It ruins immersion to a greater degree by homogonising the settlements look in different environments; you can’t tell me that a settlement in the forest should look the same as one in the desert. It’s not about ‘realism’ as was said in another post, it’s just about making the player feel immersed in the game.
c) My third point comes on the back of the first two; it’s quite disconcerting that, as far as I can see it you, the devs, are unwilling to consider adopting this aspect of the game despite the fact that most of the suggestion threads I’ve seen, both on here and on steam seem to think it’s something that *should* be part of the game. I think if you do not take this into account it shows an unwillingness to support the people who have supported you.
I understand that you guys are weary of this because of games like Banished and Forest Village but it seems to me that its up to you to use some creativity and create a different system that is unique to your game. I don’t think any of the people who have asked after resource renewability have expected you to follow the lead of those games in the system you create; we merely want some sort of settlement that doesn’t seem like its going to run out of building materials all the time. Honestly, it seems lazy that you are choosing not to include this system, based on some arbitrary idiosyncratic attitude towards resource collection.
If this is just not something you would ever consider, although I hope that is not the case, I think you should make it clear to people that this is the case in the game description because it is, based on other games of this nature, a fair assumption on the part of the buyer; I wouldn’t have bought the game if I knew this was the case.
2. On a more lighthearted note, I think all three building materials should not be necessary for every construction. Perhaps, offering something like a ‘brick house’ ‘metal house’ ‘wood house’ option could solve this.
3. I think that the landscape and environment should play a role in the layout and functions of a settlement. For instance, hills should give buildings a defensive advantage, lakes should be available as sources of water through purifiers. Perhaps in line with 1b, you could make adobe houses in the desert terrain and igloos in the snow.
4. I think there should definitely a better terraforming system as well as a road building option.
5. I think there should be guidelines as to what 1 citizens exact needs are, ie how much food they eat per day, so as to make the planning process easier.
6. Perhaps I have missed this and, if so I apologise, but it would be great if you could put the future plans into a succinct thread so we can see what’s coming. Something akin to how they do in 7 Days to Die or The Forest.
Thanks for the game and I look forward to your reply.
