A thread for suggestions regarding the darker side of life in a post apocalypse scenario.
I would like to start it off with cannibalism. People will sometimes resort to this when too hungry. Maybe it could be a hanging offence or alternatively encouraged lol.

I think that some of the children wandering about would probably be missing their parents or those who were looking after them. Some of them could even become like feral children if people are too busy trying to survive, and start doing things like stealing resources and hoarding them, or carry out vandalism in places where there aren't many adults, damaging the ability of certain buildings to function at full efficiency. Morale would go down too.

My imagination is already pretty damn dark so I'll be watching this thread to see if anybody comes up with ideas for social problems they think should be represented or at least discussed that we haven't already got on the drawing board.

If there is no law punishment centre, the townspeople might start to take matters into their own hands, and form mobs which carry out their own methods of killing whoever they don't like, from hangings, stonings, or even burnings. The skin of humanity is pretty thin when it comes down to it.

We have a plan for vigilantes. I don't want to say much about it at the moment as we haven't even started coding it but it will be tied to one of the punishment solutions you pick most likely.

Whilst discussing the badness and what not, how about unemployed forming gangs that pimp out people and steal resources? Hell, you could even include your enforcers looking the other way because they're corrupt.

Love the idea for corrupt enforcers. I definitely think there's potential to expand their AI over time.

I noticed that one of the upcoming offenses was citizens paying with sex for services, why not add brothels. Red light district so to say.

I noticed that one of the upcoming offenses was citizens paying with sex for services, why not add brothels. Red light district so to say. Not started on it yet, but current idea is prostitutes will gather around any taverns you have, so you'll naturally create a red ht district if you permit it in your town.

ideas for some issues to deal with
shanghai - people in old days would get people drunk then sell them off to ships - now of course no ships but traders need people to pull things and carry stuff or just sell them off - maybe one of your taverns is doing this but the traders are giving you a good discount to look the other way - is a few people going missing worth the discount to you what if people find out - lots of layers there
cannibalism is always a good one but never underestimate people trying to make a quick buck - maybe one of the meat vendors is selling some cheap unidentified meat - do you crack down on it letting people know they have been feasting on the dead - do you just tell him to only use corpses and pay off the guys at the crematorium for choice cuts or do you just let him get his meat any way he can and lower your need for food
I mean there is a ton more but these 2 seemed the 2 most ones that would make people really debate morality versus survival

Not quite the same as your suggestion, but next version does come with slavery - which does come with an upside if you allow it. Cannibalism is on our list of social issues to add already. And yes, there will be tempting reasons to let them get away with it too.

well I read the next update and it feels more like a cult of personality then slavery to me - one person leading others even with threats of violence there is enough people in the town to put them down quickly - where as cults are a whole different can of worms - do you outlaw it - how many people belong to it? will they break up or will they leave your town - will they revolt against your peace keeper forces or willy they try to kill you personally - never underestimate peoples desperation for something to rally around it - how do the other groups in towns feel about it will they accept them with open arms or will they quickly go to distrust them
where as slavery I don't know feels more like does your town buy / maintain slaves as a whole - do you have slave labor you captured who is the slaves are they innocent men and women your own forces caught or is it bandits / criminals on chain gangs from your prison (new prison sentence to) and how does your community feel with each version of slaves I mean sure some might be against all of them but will they be upset that murderers are forced to hard labor or bandits? even worked to death? probably not as much but some will and that can cause issues with even a few

Cults/Factions are one of the things on our list of stuff to add one day. We've mentioned a few details about them here and there in other dev blogs though they're several versions away I'd imagine.
Regarding slavery citizens within your own town who have the might will capture unemployed people in your own town and use them to service their needs. It's done by force as there is no money in Atomic Society yet (a town of 200 people is not going to have time to re-invent currency).
For now slavery is a simple crime to encourage or forbid but later on the Factions will feel differently about it of course.
